Julien Neaves, Caribbean Head Writer
Longtime Red Mango Readers will know I greatly love two things: Sci Fi and Caribbean content (Cariwood). So when I discovered 2021 Barabadian Sci Fi short Visitors I was excited to check it out. Directed by Cherah Belgrave, the film follows a man visiting his grandfather on the same night aliens decide to visit the Earth. And one of the locations the extraterrestrials pay a visit to is his grandfather’s humble home.
Visitors is a cool film. The acting is solid. The lighting, sound effects and editing are well done, save for an overly loud radio in the opening act. The alien design is your generic grays but they look real enough to be threatening. All these elements combine to create quite the tense and foreboding atmosphere. And the initial twist is an interesting one.
But like an unwelcome visitor the short goes on too long and severely undermines what came before. There are not one but TWO more twists, one which made me laugh out loud with just how utterly ridiculous it was. Take those missteps away and we could have had a really strong short. But Visitors does more right than wrong, and I would still recommend visiting it for yourself.
Editor Jules’s Score: 6.5 out of 10

Julien “Editor Jules” Neaves is a TARDIS-flying, Force-using Trekkie whose bedroom stories were by Freddy Krueger, learned to be a superhero from Marvel, but dreams of being Batman. I love promoting Caribbean film (Cariwood), creating board games and I am an aspiring author. I say things like “12 flavours of awesome sauce”. Read more.
