Arrows that create giant mushrooms where they hit, a giant crab you can ride and a guy that throws hippos around like they weigh nothing. What you call weird we call anime, but even I have to admit Sabikui Bisco is a weird one.
In a post-apocalyptic world where a plague-like wind has turned everything it touches into rust Bisco Akaboshi, known as the “Man-Eating Mushroom” (he’s not a mushroom nor does he eat people, but stick with me on this), is a criminal archer whose arrows instantly grow mushrooms wherever they land. But nothing is at it seems as Bisco is in fact a “Mushroom Protector”, a person who spreads fungi in order to enrich the land and return it to its previous state.
Think Mad Max meets Blade Runner meets a level of quirkiness that can only be found in anime. This six-episode arc (five of which are already available to stream over at Crunchyroll) is based on the light novel Rust-Eater Bisco. And while I wouldn’t call it “must-see” the animation is sharp, the pacing is tight and the laughs and action are plentiful, not to mention the world itself is intriguing enough to keep your attention.
Most anime series require you to pay close attention or at the very least invest a lot of time into following. But with only six episodes and a lighter narrative feel, probably due to the source content being a light novel series instead of a longer manga run, Sabikui Bisco is the kind of anime that you can sit back and quickly enjoy. It may not offer a six-course meal but it’s the type of snack any fan of the genre would find satisfying.
