‘Island Law Episode 3’ is the Best Yet (Trinidad and Tobago)

Julien Neaves, Caribbean Head Writer

It has been a wait for the newest episode of 80s-inspired TT cop web series Island Law (Episode 2 dropped in March last year) but the wait was worth it. Continuing the adventures of undercover cop Sean Christian (played by series creator Maurice George) the newest episode, The Only Way, features more guns, more standoffs and more shoot-outs.

We shift focus to the bad guys and it is good to be bad. Albert Smith, who nails the stereotypical 80s Spanish drug dealer as Alejandro Rodriguez, really gets to shine. Whether he is making secret deals, threatening people or executing them, it never fails to be entertaining. Also making his mark is Paul Ng Wai as Raven, a rival criminal and a delightfully over-the-top character. The opening scenes with these characters starts things off with a bang, literally.

Well I am on a boat and you are not. So I am obviously better than you

We also spend some time with our quippy lead Sean Christian and he continues his snarky, charming ways. He also has an unexpected visitor at home that leads to some amusing moments. We don’t get too much of ex-DEA agent Richard Thomas (Jason Boos), who if you recall is trying to rescue his sister from Rodriguez. He does feature in a cool sniper shoot-out and I am still looking forward to him and Sean teaming up.

We do have some unintentional comedy (I presume) when an African character inexplicably loses his African accent. I expected they would play it for laughs but they keep it straight. And there is a scene where a character repeats dialogue verbatim which appears to be a continuity error. But these are minor issues for what is another fun entry from the folks at Elevation Studios. And the episode ends on quite the exciting cliffhanger.

Aye! You listening to me? Boy. stop daydreaming!

So fans of 80s-style cop dramas, or if you are just interested in seeing some Trini talent on the small screen, then you should take a look at Island Law Episode 3.
