Alyssa Milano’s Netflix Thriller ‘Brazen’ is Brazenly Average

Sommerleigh Pollonais, Senior Writer

I read a lot of suspense-based novels and the protagonist is usually female, so when I saw the trailer for Brazen it made me think of books by Linda Gardner, one of my favourite suspense authors. Throw in Alyssa Milano in the lead role as Grace Miller, a suspense novelist whose sister is murdered so she teams up with detective Ed (Sam Page) to try and solve the case, well I figured I was either going to get a Linda Gardner quality tale or a Lifetime movie with a bigger budget. Seeing this is Netflix my odds were 50/50 so I figured why not? The lesson I came away with is I should never gamble.

Brazen is anything but. You would think considering the sexy themes and the fact the platform being Netflix opens up the way for a story that can go darker than your average television thriller, that they would’ve pushed the boundaries more. Instead what we got here was your average and say it with me, Lifetime-movie-of-the-week, and the acting to go along with that.

So if you’re not the boss sir, then who is?

Alyssa Milano has never been an award-winning actress but she’s usually a good bet for an entertaining watch; here it felt like she was just sleepwalking through the role of a woman trying to catch her sister’s killer. Same can be said for the rest of the cast. A lot of attractive people that make no real impact beyond the surface. Unlike a Linda Gardner novel this story is also painfully predictable and I’m guessing most viewers will pinpoint the killer ten minutes into the story.

Funny enough, these types of movies can make for decent guilty pleasures. Guilty as Sin, The Hand that Rocks the Cradle and Fatal Attraction are all great examples of this but sadly Brazen is nothing more than a fluff piece. A thriller that fails to thrill and a movie that’s about as sexy as your grandmother in form-fitting leather tights.

Sommer’s Score: 6 out of 10
