Top 5 Horror Channels on YouTube

Sommerleigh Pollonais, Horror Head Writer

When you enjoy something there’s nothing better than sharing that enjoyment and excitement with folks just like yourself. It’s the reason conventions of all sorts exist and it’s the reason YouTube is as popular as it is. And there are YouTubers who create channels where fans from all over the world can connect to discuss their theories and opinions or just sit back and enjoy creative content.

And for genre fans like myself who grew up being made to feel weird for loving horror the way I did/do these channels, and the people who create them, can feel a bit like home. Here are my TOP 5 FAVOURITE HORROR CHANNELS ON YOUTUBE:

#5 Crypt TV

One of the best channels for original horror shorts and series, Crypt TV has also created some of the strangest, scariest and awesomely eye-catching monsters you will ever see. I found this channel seven years ago and they’ve only gotten bigger and better with time.

My favourite of their unique line-up of creatures is the Look-See, a monster who might be cousins with the Pale Man from Pan’s Labyrinth. So if your idea of great horror includes the kinds of monsters dreamt up by only the craziest of minds you should definitely check out Crypt TV.

#4 Coffeehouse Crime

For those who prefer their horror with a heavy dose of realism, you don’t get any realer than the stories found on Coffeehouse Crime. Not only does this channel have a catchy name, it’s also stands out among most horror channels because of its content. All the stories told here are based on true crimes, making the horror all the more real. But host Adrian treats all of these stories with respect and he ends every video by honouring the victims, never glamourising the crime nor the monsters that commit them.

I wouldn’t recommend bingeing on these videos as the content here is not for the faint of heart, but if you’re a fan of true crime and you’re looking for a channel that is both informative and respectful, Coffeehouse Crime is the one I recommend hands down.

#3 CZ’s World

I found CZ all the way back in 2006 and I enjoy his work now as much as I did back then. There’s lots of channels that do analyses on films, but CZ’s focus is solely on horror and his deep dives into the “things you’ve missed” are always fun and informative. It’s amazing to me the stuff I missed in films I’ve watched over and over again, so this YouTuber always keeps me entertained and on my toes.

It also makes you want to go re-watch all your favourite horror movies (like you need an excuse). For instance, his latest breakdown of The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It and how it fits into all of the movies that came before in this franchise makes you see these films in a whole different light.

CZ’s World is a world worth visiting.

#2 Dead Meat

Awesome intro with a great 80’s synth beat and a host whose love of horror is written all over his face, James A Janisse and his fiancée Chelsea have created one of the absolute best horror fan channels YouTube has to offer in Dead Meat.

When I first found this channel back in 2017, I thought it was called “Kill Count” because that’s basically the main premise of what James does. He counts all the kills that can be found in a horror movie (can you imagine what went into counting films like Zombieland and Train to Busan?!) and he awards them, with the best getting Golden Chainsaw and the worst getting Dull Machete. Yes the kill count is the heart of each video, but there is so much more to be found here. James also gives you the backstory on the making of these wonderful movies, the people behind them and a whole bunch of other trivia, all of which combine to make each video fun and highly entertaining to watch.

Totally addictive and highly binge-able, the best part is how much the love of the genre emanates from every aspect of this channel. I don’t think you can truly call yourself a horror fan if you’re not also a fan of Dead Meat.

#1 FoundFlix

I ADORE Dead Meat and it was as close as it could get for me when I was trying to figure out which one of these channels would be my number one. But I just had to give the honour to this one because if my horror-loving brain was a YouTube channel, it would probably look a lot like FoundFlix.

I can’t begin to tell you how much of my youth I spent narrating every aspect of the movie I saw over the weekend to my friends at school. Not to toot my own horn or anything (toot toot!) but I’ve even been told by some that it felt like they had seen the movie themselves when I’d finish talking about it. And then of course there were the discussions about what the movie meant or what it was all about. This is what host and creator of FoundFlix Chris Dandridge does so well. He takes genre films, both past and present, specifically the ones that may have ambiguous content or confusing endings, and he explains them. You could argue these are just his opinions and you would be right, but ask anyone who’s a fan of his content and they’ll probably tell you, Chris’s “Endings Explained” are well thought out and makes a whole heap of sense 99.9 per cent of the time.

It’s a channel that takes the joys of sitting around discussing your favourite movies and it opens it up to the entire world in a way that wouldn’t be possible without the technology that exists today. And there’s been more than one subscriber who has professed to never having seen the movie being discussed. They just enjoy Chris’ breakdowns so much, they don’t feel the need to! If that doesn’t speak volumes for how awesome the genre-based channel FoundFlix is, I don’t what will!

Although I have these channels ranked from five to one, I don’t think of any one as lesser or better than the rest. I love each and everyone of them and I admire the passion and the hard work that went into creating this level of amazing content.

So if you’re a fan of horror and you’re looking for others who share your passions, you should most definitely check out each and every one of these stellar channels. Informative, funny, entertaining and unique, go ahead click subscribe, don’t forget to comment, and start sharing your love of horror in a whole new way.
