Julien Neaves, Caribbean Head Writer

In my years of covering Caribbean content (Cariwood) I have done reviews from the Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, Curaçao, Dominican Republic, Guadeloupe, Haiti, Jamaica (a few), Martinique, St Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago (a lot from TT). My review today, 2014 comedy short The Mango Tree, is my very first from St Lucia. Sak pase (what’s up?) Lucian posse?!

The eight-minute film, written, directed and produced by Ted Sandiford aka ACID of arts and entertainment company A.C.I.D. Kreationz, begins with an English boy (the accent is a bit suspect) and a St Lucian boy stealing mangoes from a tree. When they hear someone coming they hide, and this begins a mini-parade of characters with various issues.

When you find your girlfriend and best friend in the bush in a, how should I put this, compromising position

The acting is okay, including from the young leads Danté Sandiford and Sylvanus George, but the zany sound effects are a bit campy and the writing could have been a bit punchier. That said, The Mango Tree is still a light, whimsical, family friendly slice of life with a few laughs to be had. And with the brief runtime it’s worth climbing into as a breezy diversion.

Editor Jules’s Score: 5.5 out of 10
