Netflix’s Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous S2 Lacks the Bite of the First

Julien Neaves, Editor

The world of the Jurassic Park/World franchise got a bit bigger with the release of the second season of Netflix’s animated series Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous. And while a solid effort, the sophomore season just lacks the strength of the first. Here’s my quick bite review and beware SPOILERS for the first season and mild spoilers for the new one.

Season 2 finds the five former Camp Cretaceous campers — dino smart leader Darius, athletic Yasmina, rich slacker Kenji, affable Sammy and blogger Brooklynn — trapped on the dinosaur island of Isla Nublar after the events of Jurassic World (the series is a prequel/sidequel/sequel) and still reeling from the loss of resident germaphobe Ben. As the five seek to send a message to the mainland for rescue they will encounter new enemies, both of the dinosaur and human variety, a new mystery and a shocking discovery.

Could you guys move a little faster? I really need to pee

Now I had a lot of fun with the first season. I found it a well-executed blend of dino scares and young adult adventure that both paid homage to the source material and did its own thing. And while Season 2 adds some new elements to the mix and there was some of it I enjoyed, like the new Lost-esque mystery subplot, overall it just seemed, well, lesser.

The dino scares were less intense and more derivative. Only a couple characters got any major development while others received none at all. And there was much less variety in the settings and dino appearances. Now I was still entertained this season and I am on board for another, but it just felt like they were resting on their laurels somewhat after the big effort of the first season.

Excuse me. Might you have a little something I can nibble on? I am terribly famished

Mind you I would still recommend the series, and I would rewatch Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous Season 2 a hundred times before I watch Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom a second time. Man, I hate that movie. They better not screw the pterodactyl again for Jurassic World: Dominion next year.

Editor Jules’ Score: 6.5 out of 10
