‘The Doorman’ Delivers Slamming Action But Zero Substance

Sommerleigh Pollonais – Senior Writer

Do I really need to review this one guys? I mean, it’s another action-movie-of-the-minute, this time starring Ruby Rose (CW’s Batwoman, The Meg, John Wick: Chapter 2) with a premise right out of the “damaged hero seeks redemption” playbook. An ex-soldier fails to protect their clients from a terrorist attack. They return home broken and take a job as a doorman of a mostly empty building, only to have a group of thieves break in to steal “something.” Of course they didn’t count on John McClane – sorry, wrong film, uh ok, they didn’t count on Ali Grotsky. Cue CGI explosions and generic bad guys.

I’m sure he’ll be okay

I have nothing against Ms Rose but calling her an actress is a bit of a stretch. While I thought she did well as Kate Kane aka Batwoman, here she’s as one note as an out of tune guitar. Our pack of thieves are led by Jean Reno (Léon: The Professional, the first Mission Impossible) and while he’s not terrible, he’s just here to add another top name to the movie credits. Honestly, anyone else could’ve worked in this role.

I will say this for the film, the fight sequences are very well done and you can tell some work went into the choreography. Everything else, you’ve seen a dozen times before in similar “straight to streaming” fare. Mel Gibson’s Force of Nature was the last action movie I saw recently and the premise was almost identical to this one. So unless you’re jonesing for some Ruby Rose, there really isn’t any reason to watch The Doorman.

How Ruby Rose ‘negotiated’ her way out of her Batwoman contract. Kidding. I’m kidding. Please don’t sue us…

That’s two for two on the “meh” scale so far for me this weekend. Here’s hoping my next pick is a winner.

Sommer’s Score: 4.5 out of 10
