Sommerleigh Pollonais – Horror Head Writer
Whoever keeps saying “it couldn’t get any worse,” please stop. This year has been one of the most unpredictable ones I can remember, and it feels like we’re tempting fate whenever we talk about how excited we are for upcoming movies because they keep getting pushed back.
So let’s just write this year off and take a glance over the fence at some exciting genre flicks coming our way next year.
Here are the Top 6 Upcoming Horror Movies I’m Excited For (and you should be too):
#6 Spiral: Book of Saw
I’m not a huge fan of the Saw franchise. I personally felt like they wrapped things up pretty nicely with the first three films and the rest was just a cash grab. That said, the upcoming Spiral: Book of Saw looks to be breathing new life into the franchise and with Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw II, III and IV) returning to direct and Chris Rock playing against type, I’m genuinely intrigued to see where they take us with this one.
So yes, I would like to play a game.
#5 Army of the Dead
Zack Snyder and I have a rocky relationship. On one hand he gave me one of the best remakes of a horror classic I’ve ever seen with Dawn of the Dead. And on the other hand…well the less we talk about Batman v Superman the better.
So even though he tried to ruin Supes for me, I readily admit to being excited for his revisit to the horror genre, Army of the Dead. It’s a zombie heist film starring Dave Bautista, Theo Rossi, Omari Hardwick and Hiroyuki Sanada, just to name a few, how could I NOT want to see that?!! You better do right by me Snyder.
There are so few original ideas out there, especially when it comes to horror movies, and too many of the good ones disappear into the fog. So seeing the Candyman brought back to the big screen is a dream come true for fans of this urban horror legend.
Director Nia DaCosta may not have a lot of experience, but she’s caught the attention of Jordan Peele who is the guiding force and the writer of this sequel, so you know she’s gonna bring it. The icing on this cake is the return of Tony Todd as the honeyed voice and honey coated (wink wink) Candyman, as well as Virginia Mardsen and Vanessa Estelle Williams who both starred in the first (and best) movie of the bunch.
I’ve got a good feeling about this one folks!
#3 Halloween Kills
I begrudgingly admit, Michael Myers is bringing the heat once again. Begrudgingly because I’m a Jason Voorhees fan for life and I’m pissed he hasn’t been on the big screen since that, somewhat okay remake.
2018’s Halloween was a win for creators David Gordon Green and Danny McBride so it goes without saying that we were gonna get sequels (no matter what they previously claimed). Halloween Kills is picking up directly after the events of Halloween (I dig that!) and with OG final girl Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) still alive and kicking, you just know they have to up the stakes in a big way to keep the fans happy.
Also, I’ll never give up on you Jason. Your time will come my machete-wielding, hockey-mask wearing friend.
#2 The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It
If you read my article titled Top 5 Horror Movie Couples (I’ll link it below), you’ll know how much I adore the demon busting duo, Ed and Lorraine Warren. My favorite films of The Conjuring franchise are the ones where they are front and centre.
Well, The Conjuring 3 promises to do just that and I couldn’t be more excited to see Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga take on these roles once again. Now I’m a little bit worried that director Michael Chaves is behind the lens on this one as The Curse of La Llorona is only slightly better than the “swing and a miss” that was The Nun. But there is some light at the end of this tunnel because James Wan, creator of this wonderfully creepy universe, and David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, who wrote my favorite movie of the bunch The Conjuring 2, are both the writers of The Devil Made Me Do It. So fingers crossed, Conjuring 3 is gonna be another win for this franchise.
Honourable Mention: Last Night in SoHo
A psychological horror film directed and co-written by Edgar Wright?! The same Edgar Wright who gave the world Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and The World’s End aka The Cornetto Trilogy? C’mon guys, do you even need to ask?! Of course I’m excited for this one!
#1 A Quiet Place Part II
Ask anyone who goes to the movies (or useD to, sigh) on a weekly basis and they’ll tell you sometimes it all blends together. My friends would get annoyed with me because I would be asking them if they saw a movie and they would have to remind me that they were WITH ME when they saw it. Oops!
But then there are those movie-going experiences that stick with you no matter what, and I will never forget the eerie quiet that covered the entire theatre when I went to see A Quiet Place. Not since Jaws have I known people to have such a visceral reaction to a story. Hell, people were apologising for their snack bags making too much noise. It was that intense, and gladly the movie lived up to its premise and turned out to be a wonderful addition to the horror genre.
Director and writer John Krasinski was also smart enough to keep the story so mysterious that people would be clamoring for a sequel that further explained the five W’s of this world. What are these creatures? Where are the other survivors? How (yes “how” is one of the w’s, look it up) could the world possibly come back from the brink of extinction and destroy them for good?
A Quite Place Part II looks to answer at least a few of these questions, while opening up the world to introduce new characters and issues for our surviving family from the first film to deal with.
Hopefully by the time this, or any of the above titles drop, we’ll be able to watch them the way they were intended – with a large bucket of popcorn, our favourite soda and maybe even a few friends alongside us.
Or maybe even six feet apart. I’ll take anything I can get at this point.
