There are directors whose names are synonymous with great movies, like Christopher Nolan, Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese just to name a few. And then there are the ones who I feel just don’t get ENOUGH credit for their work, like Guy Ritchie.
It’s not that his work isn’t recognized as the man has made some truly iconic films, like Snatch, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and of course, Sherlock Holmes, but personally I love nearly his entire body of work (yes, I’m including King Arthur Legend of the Sword, but no I’m not including Swept Away…that was a Madonna-level mess).
His latest The Gentlemen is a return to form and if you loved his gangster films, Snatch, Lock, Layer Cake and the vastly underrated RocknRolla, you’re gonna have a blast with these gentlemen.
Matthew McConaughey proves once again he’s more than a pretty face, playing our lead Michael Pearson with equal parts nuance, charisma and confidence, but he doesn’t do it alone. Hugh Grant is a treat as a reporter with zero morals, Charlie Hunnam is all style as Michael’s second-in-command Ray, Colin Farrell adds to the fun every time he pops up on screen, and that’s just the appetizer of this satisfying five-star meal.
With Ritchie behind the lens, we get a ton of stylish scenes, sexy editing, witty dialogue (like only the English can pull off) and a great gangster flick with a truly satisfying conclusion.
Another sucky side effect of covid19 is films like this one have flew under many a movie viewer’s radar. But it’s never too late to catch up on a great movie so go check this one out now and while you’re at it, go watch The Man from UNCLE because that’s also another Guy Ritchie movie that didn’t get the love it deserves.
Score: 8.5 out of 10
