While surfing YouTube today and watching the Top 10 Ugliest Wedding Dresses Ever (don’t judge me) I saw an ad for Queen of Katwe and I was so moved I had to do a post on it.
Katwe is a Disney/ESPN biographical sports drama film and tells the story of Ugandan chess prodigy Phiona Mutesi; she is from the eponymous Katwe, an area in Kampala, the East African country’s capital city. The film stars David Oyelowo (Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Selma) as chess coach Robert Katende, Academy Award-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years a Slave, Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens) as Phiona’s mother Harriet and Ugandan newcomer Madina Nalwanga as Phiona. It is directed by Indian American filmmaker Mira Nair (Mississipi Massala, Monsoon Wedding).
In the trailer we see Phiona living in a slum area, her chess talent being discovered and traveling the world to play chess competitively. The cinemtography is breathtaking, the performances appear solid and the touching moments between Nyong’o and Nalwanga warmed my heart and brought tears to my eyes. And this is just the trailer!
Queen of Katwe looks set to be a beautiful, inspirational movie and I definitely have to check it out when it opens September 30. Here’s the trailer for your viewing pleasure:
