As the countdown continues for the premiere of ‘The Flash’ Season 3 in October we got a new trailer to whet our already razor sharp appetites.
For this post I will be discussing the trailer and doing a round up of what we know so far, so SPOILER ALERT for the Season 2 Finale.
#1 Flashpoint aka You did what now?
In the trailer (linked at the end) we see the effects of Barry going back in time and saving his mother from Reverse Flash at the end of the last season. We see Barry chatting with either his father or Jay Garrick (the real one), explaining to someone the alternate reality he accidentally created (the show’s version of the comic book “Flashpoint” storyline) and alternate reality Cisco who is the richest man in America.
It’s much shorter than the trailer released at Comic Con (see below) and does not really add anything new. In terms of the story arcs and episodes for the upcoming season here is what we know so far:
- Star Grant Gustin said he does not expect Flashpoint to last too long but to have “permanent effects”. I’m thinking either a villain or hero or both will cross from the Flashpoint reality into the main reality when it is restored
- There will be a two parter featuring Gorilla City and Gorilla Grodd. The big ape’s previous two appearances were big event episodes and I am excited to see what they will do with Gorilla City
- Caitlyn Snow’s past will be revealed. In the last season she told Jay (the disguised Zoom) that her father had multiple sclerosis so we may see more of that storyline and likely in flashbacks. And Ronnie Raymond could also make a return via flashback
- We will have a two part musical crossover with ‘Supergirl’ – we’ll see how that goes – as well as the nerdgasm inducing four part crossover with the three CW sister series ‘Supergirl’, ‘Arrow’ and ‘DC Legends of Tomorrow’. I just know it will be 12 flavours of awesome sauce!
#2 Cisco to go full Vibe
We know The Flash can only save the day with a little help from his friends and for Season 3 he will be getting help from Wally West as speedster Kid Flash and Cisco as Vibe with full costume. I spoke about Wally/Kid Flash in a previous post (see here) but I am even more excited to see Cisco go full Vibe.
We have seen him use his time and timeline perception powers previously, wear his cool Vibe shades and seen his Earth-2 counterpart use destructive sonic blasts but I am eager to see Cisco take on his superhero role. He is going to be like a kid in a candy store. Let’s just hope his costume is more like his modern look:
Than his classic look:
#3 Two for one big bads
Every season has to have its main villain or “big bad” but Season 3 will have two: comic baddies Doctor Alchemy and Savitar. In the comics Alchemy is a chemist named Albert Desmond with a good/evil multiple personality disorder like Batman villain Two-Face.
In his Doctor Alchemy persona he uses the fabled Philosopher’s Stone to transmute one element to another which I can foresee being used for some sweet special effects and sequences. Though he is supposed to be one of two big bads I foresee him being the bigger bad of the two. I was not blown away by Zoom last season (no pun intended), especially compared to how great the Reverse Flash was in Season 1, so I hope that Alchemy can bring the goods.
On the second big bad, Savitar, in the comics he was a Cold War pilot for a third world nation who gained super speed when the supersonic jet he was piloting was hit by what appeared to be lightning. He gets his name from the Hindu god of motion Savitr.
In the first trailer he is pictured in a black costume with yellow lightning embellishments which is preferable to his bare chested comic look. Other villains scheduled to appear include: Mirror Master, one of Flash’s most infamous Rogues who has the power to travel via any reflective surface; a gender swapped version of male villain Top who can spin at incredible speeds; and The Rival, a speedster who gets his powers from the drug Velocity 9 and wears a darker version of Jay Garrick’s costume. The Eobard Thawne Reverse Flash and King Shark will also be returning.
I am very hyped to see all the new baddies, Vibe and Kid Flash and how they treat the Flashpoint storyline. Overall the upcoming season sounds fantastic and if the show runners can maintain the quality from the previous two seasons we are in for quite a ride. ‘The Flash’ Season 3 premieres Tuesday October 4.
