After posting my Rogue One: A Star Wars Story trailer review (shameless plug here) I thought I was finished for the day. Then I read the news that Thomas Gibson, who plays Unit Chief / Senior Supervisory Special Agent Aaron “Hotch” Hotchner on ‘Criminal Minds’, had been fired from the long running FBI procedural.
According to reports he was let go after an alleged altercation on set in which he reportedly kicked a staffer in the shin. Ouch! In a statement to PEOPLE Gibson responded to his firing: “I love Criminal Minds and have put my heart and soul into it for the last 12 years. I had hoped to see it through to the end, but that won’t be possible now. I would just like to say thank you to the writers, producers, actors, our amazing crew, and most importantly, the best fans that a show could ever hope to have.”
Now I am not going to get into the details of the incident but as a fan of this fantastic show this is really sad news. Gibson has been a main character on the show since it premiered way back in 2005 and his strong will and no nonsense attitude has made him quite favorite. I really cannot imagine the show without him. In light of this news I decided to rate the Top 8 characters that have hunted criminals and delved into their twisted minds:
#8 Jason Gideon (Mandy Patinkin)
Gideon was cool and cerebral as the team’s lead but he was not as exciting as Hotch. Sorry Mandy.
#7 Emily Prentiss (Paget Brewster)
Prentiss had lots of pluck and assertiveness but she was not as memorable as the top six on the list.
#6 David Rossi (Joe Mantegna)
Rossi is always a good time with his ex-wives stories and avuncular feel. A self-sufficient man of passion who faced great tragedies in his life, he always remained resilient and turned to his team in a pinch.
#5 Jennifer “JJ” Jareau (A.J. Cook)
Can I just say off the bat that A.J. Cook is gorgeous. A.J. Cook is gorgeous. Now that that’s out of the way JJ as the communications liaison has the unenviable task of dealing with victims’ families and the press. But she always brings a positivity and warmth which is very necessary when dealing with the darkest of human natures.
#4 Derek Morgan (Shemar Moore)
Come on ladies, you know you missing him. He was a man of action always ready to run into danger and also brought lightness to the show as he constantly flirted with technical analyst Penelope Garcia. It was a great loss when he left the show after season 11 especially for female viewers who lost their bar of eye chocolate.
#3 Penelope Garcia (Kirsten Vangsness)
How could you not love Penelope. She’s quirky, upbeat and a boss behind a computer. We need her and her bright outfits to balance all the murder and mutilation in the rest of the show.
#2 Dr Spencer Reid (Matthew Gray Gubler)
This genius, socially awkward agent is always an interesting watch. You never know what random fact he will drop or brilliant logical leap he will make. It would not be “Criminal Minds” without our man Reid.
#1 Aaron Hotchner (Thomas Gibson)
When I think about this show the first face that comes to mind is Hotch’s. We have watched him lead the team to hell and back and seen him go through hell and back with his family. His never wavering strength and strong moral centre has been the backbone of the show for more than a decade and his loss is devastating.
So what is your favorite character from “Criminal Minds” character? Feel free to comment below.
