Everyone’s favorite stoic time traveling samurai will be making his triumphant return to Cartoon Network for 2016 after being off the air for 12 long years.

For those unfamiliar with the Emmy award winning show ‘Samurai Jack’ tells the story of a lone samurai, “Jack”, battling a tyrannical shape shifting demon called Aku. Jack is displaced in time and ends up on a dystopian Earth ruled by Aku and his evil minions.

The series was created by Genndy Tartakovsky, who also created ‘Dexter’s Laboratory’, co-created ‘Star Wars: Clone Wars’ micro-series and directed both Hotel Transylvania flicks.

Dang Jack. Somebody sure got you mad

The series, which ran for 52 episodes and five seasons from 2001-2004, featured a luscious art style, gripping action and great moments of wit. Last year Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim block of shows teased the show’s return. This was confirmed by a recent article in Variety.com where it was also reported that Tartakovsky will once again be at the helm. No word yet on when the show will premiere.

Tartakovsky showed off some concept apart (see above) at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival and we also got some details on the show: 10 episodes long but it will be paced like a “five-hour movie”; it will take place 50 years after the events of the show; and we will have a “darker” Jack (gizmodo.com) which all sounds pretty sweet.

It is on like tinned creamed corn…

The character of Jack was voiced by veteran voice actor Phil LaMarr (‘Justice League’, ‘Futurama’), but the new season will have to recast the voice of Aku as the Japanese-born American actor Mako Iwamatsu passed away in 2006 from cancer.

‘Samurai Jack’ is one of the most unique animated shows I have ever seen and I adored the animation style, brutal fight sequences, extremely weird creatures, super cool Jack and cackling Aku. I am so glad that Jack is coming back.
